International News Assignment

1. How effective do you think the Internet will be for Al Jazeera as it attempts to reach a U.S. audience?

I think the Internet will be very effective. I've heard a lot about Al Jazeera in several of my Com classes, and that caused me to check it out online. I get the news from the Internet much more often than from television, which I think is also true for a lot of people my age. Therefore, Al Jazeera will probably have a lot of success online as long as its name is getting spread through word of mouth.

2. Based on your own observations, do you think that Al Jazeera English should be allowed to broadcast in the U.S.?

I don't see why not. It's just another source of the news, and it has its biases like every other network. Also, there are so many people in this country that are oblivious to what goes on outside of the United States. Al Jazeera could help to rectify that.

3. What, if anything, do you notice about Al Jazeera's approach to telling the news? How is it different than the U.S.-based TV news outlets that you have experienced?

U.S.-based networks tend to promote America as the protagonist when it comes to foreign relations. Al Jazeera doesn't sugarcoat it because they are not targeting an American audience. They take whatever approach they want when telling the news, even if it means reporting ill comments about the United States.

4. While on the Al Jazeera site, be sure to check out the network's published Code of Ethics. Based on your own observations, do you think they are adhering to them?

I think Al Jazeera is adhering to its Code of Ethics fairly well. Although I think its impossible not to report with some subjectivity, its refreshing to read news that doesn't slant everything toward a pro-U.S. bias. On the other hand, at times it seems that the network shows a bit of anti-American sentiment which goes against their journalistic standards. It's tough to say.
